Exhibits › Surviving Auschwitz and Hiroshima › Mandala Hiroshima
A mandala is generally defined as a “geometric figure representing the universe in Hindu and Buddhist symbolism [or] a symbol in a dream, representing the dreamer's search for completeness and self-unity.” In America, Japanese Zen-inspired art is often associated with spontaneous brush marks, muted colors, abstraction, simplicity, translucent “rice” papers, and a meditative mindset. Red, orange, and green are often favored colors. In these three mandala-like pieces of art, I tried to make coherent images out of the chaos of a devastating atomic blast used in warfare.
Tech Notes
All three mixed-media artwork was created on heavy weight Arches 100% rag watercolor paper. All adhesives are acid-free and permanent. Additional handmade and hand-painted paper are included in the pieces that are about 12x16 inches.
